Connections between Ancient Egyptians and Mesoamericans?
Give any kid a pile of blocks to build the biggest thing they possibly can. After a few entertaining crashes, they will figure out that if they want to build something stable, they have to start with a wide base and have the structure get narrower and narrower as it goes up. Egyptian and Mesoamerican pyramids are unrelated in function ("religion" is too vague of a term). Egyptian pyramids are tombs; Mesoamerican ones are temples. It's just that the pyramid design is the most basic way to build something big (as long as you have the labor to mobilize to do it) and it doesn't take much for different cultures all around the world to figure that out.
